Is your credit report free in 2026? Yes, for almost everyone. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion let you check your report once a week for free at AnnualCreditReport.com. The $16 figure is only the 2026 ceiling a credit bureau can charge when you buy a report outside the free options.
So is your credit report free? If you go through the right door, yes. A fee shows up when people pay a bureau directly without checking the free route first.
That cap changes every January. The 2027 number has not been announced yet, and past announcements came between November and late December.
Where the Free Weekly Credit Report Comes From
The Federal Trade Commission free credit reports page says the three nationwide bureaus have permanently extended a program. It lets you check your report from each bureau once a week for free at AnnualCreditReport.com.
On top of that, federal law requires each nationwide bureau to give you a free copy once every 12 months if you ask. The weekly program goes further than the law requires.
The FTC lists only three ways to order the free reports. You can use AnnualCreditReport.com, call 1-877-322-8228, or mail the Annual Credit Report Request Form. It calls that website the only one authorized to fill orders for the free annual reports.
Online, you get access right away. By phone or mail, the FTC says the report is processed and mailed within 15 days.

Other Times a Credit Report Is Free by Law
The FTC also lists situations where you can get another free report under federal law. These cover people who need to check fast.
| Your situation | Free report? | Rule on the FTC page |
|---|---|---|
| You got a notice that credit, a job, insurance or housing was denied | Yes | Ask within 60 days of the notice |
| You are unemployed and plan to apply for a job | Yes | Job search within 60 days |
| You are on public assistance | Yes | For example, welfare |
| Your report is wrong because of fraud or identity theft | Yes | Contact a credit bureau |
| You have a fraud alert on your file | Yes | Contact a credit bureau |
| None of the above | Still yes, weekly | Use AnnualCreditReport.com |
That last row matters most. Even outside the special cases, the weekly free report is still there.

Is Your Credit Report Free if You Buy It From a Bureau?
Not always. The FTC says that if you do not qualify for a free report, a bureau may charge a reasonable amount set by law. It also says to check AnnualCreditReport.com first, every time.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sets that amount each year. Its Fair Credit Reporting Act disclosures page explains the rule. The law started the cap at $8.00 and raises it on January 1 each year based on the Consumer Price Index, rounded to the nearest 50 cents.
| Year the cap applies | Maximum charge | Date CFPB announced it |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $13.50 | Nov. 29, 2021 |
| 2023 | $14.50 | Nov. 25, 2022 |
| 2024 | $15.50 | Nov. 9, 2023 |
| 2025 | $15.50, unchanged | Nov. 21, 2024 |
| 2026 | $16.00 | Dec. 15, 2025 |
| 2027 | Not announced yet | Not out as of mid-October 2026 |
The cap also has to be shown to you before the bureau hands over the report. So the price is shown before you pay.

A Credit Report Fee on a Rental or Loan Is Something Else
People also see a credit report fee on an apartment application or a mortgage closing form. That is a different charge.
The $16 cap covers what a credit bureau may charge you for your own report. The CFPB page describes it as a charge from a consumer reporting agency to a consumer for a disclosure. A landlord or lender pulling your report is not that same transaction, and this cap is not the rule for it.

How to Get Your Free Report Without Paying, Step by Step
Step 1. Type AnnualCreditReport.com yourself. The FTC warns that other sites pretend to be linked to it or claim to offer free reports.
Step 2. Be ready to verify who you are. The FTC says the bureaus ask for your name, address, Social Security number and date of birth.
Step 3. Expect questions only you would know, like a monthly mortgage payment. You answer them for each bureau separately.
Step 4. Pull all three reports. The FTC notes each bureau may get its data from different sources, so the reports can differ.
Step 5. If you find a mistake, dispute it with the bureau and with the business that supplied the information.
Honestly, the hardest part is the identity questions. Have an old statement nearby before you start.

Report and Score Are Not the Same Thing
A credit report is your full file of accounts and payment history. A credit score is a number built from it. The free weekly program is for the report.

The Short Version
Is your credit report free in 2026? Yes, every week, at AnnualCreditReport.com. The $16 cap only matters if you buy a report from a bureau outside the free options. The 2027 cap has not been announced yet.
